Title: An Overview on the Brazilian AI Strategy: Brazilian AI Centre, AI Observatory and AI Sandbox

Abstract:

n 2024, during its G20 presidency, Brazil unveiled the “AI for the Good of All” National AI Plan 2024–2028 to drive sustainable, sovereign, and inclusive AI development. To bring this strategy to life, the University of São Paulo inaugurated the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (CIAAM) in 2023, uniting multidisciplinary teams and shared infrastructure to accelerate research and industry collaboration. Concurrently, the National Data Protection Authority (ANPD), in partnership with CAF, launched a regulatory AI Sandbox pilot to enable controlled innovation while safeguarding personal data. Prof Joao Paulo Veiga will discuss the research agenda of the centre and the activities of the AI Sabdbox, as well as the Brazilian AI Observatory (OBIA), created by MCTI and NIC.br <http://nic.br/> in 2022, aggregating quantitative and qualitative AI adoption indicators to support evidence-based policymaking under Axis 5 of the national plan.
