Subject: [litlab] Lab Meeting this Thursday Dec 5, 10am: Mark
Algee-Hewitt on Failed Concepts

Dear Friends of the Stanford Literary Lab, we wanted to remind you all
of our upcoming lab presentation this Thursday, from 10:00am-12:00noon
pacific time, where our Director Mark Algee-Hewitt will be making a
brief return from leave to share with us his latest work on Failed
Concepts: The Visual and the Material. Mark describes his work as
follows:

In my ongoing project on complex compound concepts, I have argued that
conceptual change is primarily a language phenomenon. In the theory of
eighteenth-century philosophy, such concepts happen exclusively
through the combination of language. The key insight to my project is
to transform these language phenomena into visual representations,
measuring the semantic distance between clusters of terms through
language models over time in order to trace the evolution of these
abstract concepts. In this presentation, I ask two questions about
this work. First, can we use a tool such as this to find concepts with
a particular historical shape? In other words, if we hypothesize about
what a failed concept might look like, can we begin with the shape
such a concept should make and find concepts that fit the pattern as a
way of recovering forgotten failed concepts of the period? Second, as
using an image-first search violates our understanding of how data
visualizations should be used, is there a way to explore data this way
responsibly?

As always, you can join us in-person (building 460, room 401) or
online: https://stanford.zoom.us/j/92829098739?pwd=VB207cV8lxBDEXblPInWwd7QSEgp3N.1&from=addon

Looking forward to seeing you there—

[re:https://mailman.ijs.si/pipermail/slovlit/2024/008319.html]

Deutsche Tschechow-Gesellschaft e.V.
Besedilo je v nemščino prevedel prof. dr. Tilman Berger.

Lep predpraznični čas in lep pozdrav
Irma
