Predavanje bo v
angleščini. Na voljo bodo kava, pijača in prigrizki.

Umetna inteligenca in znanstvena odkritja: paradigme, napredek in potencial

dr. Pat Langley

Inštitut za preučevanje učenja in strokovnega znanja, Palo Alto,
Kalifornija, ZDA

odkrivanje matematičnih enačb in gradnjo kvalitativnih procesnih modelov. Za
vsak problem bom najprej podal definicijo računske naloge, nato pregledal
osnovne pristope in poročal o njihovih uspehih, ki so vodili do znanstvenih
spoznanj.
Predstavil bom
več pristopov k induktivnemu procesnemu modeliranju, spodbudne rezultate in

strokovnega znanja v Palo Altu v Kaliforniji. Je ustanovni urednik dveh
revij, Machine Learning leta 1986 in Advances in Cognitive Systems leta
znanstvenega znanja in kot eden izmed prvih izvedel uspešne eksperimentalne
študije strojnega učenja in njegove uporabe pri reševanju problemov v
resničnem svetu.

Artificial intelligence and scientific discovery: paradigms, progress and
potential

Dr. Pat Langley

Institute for the Study of Learning and Expertise, Palo Alto, California,
USA

Within the general excitement about artificial intelligence (AI), there has
been special interest in the technology's application to discovery of
scientific knowledge. Like AI itself, this subfield has a long history and
many successes, but also outstanding challenges. In this talk, I will focus
on two problems that have received considerable attention: discovery of
numeric equations and construction of qualitative process models. In each
case, I will define the computational task, review basic approaches, and
report successes that led to scientific insights. After this, I will turn to
a third paradigm - inductive process modeling - that moves beyond earlier
efforts to generate quantitative explanations of scientific data in terms of
domain knowledge. I will present multiple approaches to this problem,
present encouraging results, and discuss open issues that merit further
attention from the AI community.

About the lecturer: Pat Langley serves as a director of the Institute for
the Study of Learning and Expertise in Palo Alto, California. He is the
founding editor of two journals, Machine Learning in 1986 and Advances in
Cognitive Systems in 2012. He developed some of the first computational
systems for scientific knowledge discovery, and he was an early champion of
experimental studies of machine learning and its application to real-world
problems.
