"HYDROGEN STORAGE: A CRITICAL TECHNOLOGY FOR THE FUTURE"

Faced with the major issues of global warming, security of energy supply,
oil and gas depletion and inner-city pollution, there is an urgent need for
the world to reduce its reliance on carbon based energy sources and to
develop a viable alternative. Hydrogen, the lightest and most abundant
element in our universe, is now widely acknowledged as the most promising
energy alternative. Unfortunately, from an energy standpoint, on earth
hydrogen does not exist in an uncombined state and hence has to be separated
from the other constituent(s) before it can be employed as a source of clean
energy. Ideally this is best achieved by the use of sustainable primary
energy ( eg. wind, wave, hydro, solar, geothermal ) to separate hydrogen
from oxygen in H2O.However, it could also be obtained from fossil fuels such
as the abundant, world-wide reserves of coal but only if the consequent CO2
is sequestrated at source.

In this talk, the possible steps towards a Hydrogen Society will be
described and emphasis will be placed on the subject of hydrogen storage.
This can be in the form of compressed gas, liquid hydrogen or solid state
storage. This area, in particular, represents a critical paving stone in the
path towards a sustainable future using hydrogen as an energy vector.
