       Virtual Environments and Spatial Cognition

Virtual Reality technology (virtual environments, VEs) represents
a new means of approaching some old problems in psychology.
An area that has particularly benefited is spatial cognition.
VE software is sometimes referred to as "soft-where" because
it is essentially spatial. Studies in the UK have variously shown that,
despite the abnormality of VE exploration, VEs can be used as
effective training media for individuals who suffer from spatial
dysfunction. Examples will be provided of the use of desk-top
VEs in training spatial skills in children with physical disabilities
and post-retirement adults. Future potential applications, and
difficulties, will be discussed.
