POVZETEK
Predstavitev bo obravnavala dolgoletni izziv širjenja protimikrobne odpornosti (AMR), ki v Evropi povzroči vsaj 35.000 smrti letno. Raziskali bomo, kako človekove dejavnosti vplivajo na okolje, v katerem živimo, ter posledično na naše zdravje in gospodarstvo. S celostnim ekološkim in epidemiološkim pristopom bomo ocenili breme AMR vzdolž (italijanske) jadranske obale, pri čemer bomo preučili vpliv tako okoljskih kot tudi antropogenih dejavnikov. Nato se bomo osredotočili na evropske obalne gojitve ostrig. Prikazali bomo, kako lahko trajnostna akvakultura preseže zgolj lokalne gospodarske koristi ter aktivno prispeva k pridelavi visokokakovostne hrane z izboljševanjem okoljske kakovosti, namesto da bi jo izčrpavala. Na koncu bomo pokazali, da spremljanje AMR v okolju daleč presega okvire klasične epidemiologije; omogoča poglobljeno razumevanje ekosistema ter razvoj dobrih praks in napredek pobud modrega gospodarstva na evropski ravni.
In this presentation, we will address the long-standing challenge of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) spread, which accounts for at least 35,000 deaths annually in Europe alone. We will explore how anthropogenic activities impact the environment we inhabit, subsequently affecting our health and the economy. Through an integrated ecological and epidemiological approach, we will assess the burden of AMR along the (Italian) Adriatic coast, examining the influence of both environmental and human-driven variables. We will then shift our focus to European coastal oyster farms. Here, we will demonstrate how sustainable aquaculture can go beyond local economic benefits to actively promote high-quality food production by enhancing environmental quality rather than depleting it. Ultimately, this approach shows that environmental AMR surveillance extends far beyond traditional epidemiology; it fosters a deep understanding of the ecosystem, enabling the development of best practices and the advancement of Blue Economy initiatives on a continental scale.

KRATEK ŽIVLJENJEPIS:
Sem Gianluca Corno, direktor raziskav na Nacionalnem raziskovalnem svetu (CNR) – Inštitutu za raziskave voda v Verbanii ter koordinator delovne skupine za okolje v okviru PNCAR (Nacionalni akcijski načrt za protimikrobno odpornost).Svojo akademsko pot sem začel v Nemčiji, kjer sem doktoriral na Inštitutu Maxa Plancka za evolucijsko biologijo v Plönu, nato pa nadaljeval s podoktorskim raziskovanjem na IOW v Rostocku. Po krajšem obdobju kot podoktorski raziskovalec na CNR-ISE v Verbaniji sem prejel štipendijo Marie Curie na Univerzi v Zürichu, nato pa se leta 2013 vrnil v Italijo kot raziskovalec na Inštitutu za raziskave voda CNR v Verbanii, kjer sem ustanovil in od takrat tudi vodim Skupino za molekularno ekologijo (MEG). Moje raziskovalno delo se osredotoča na okoljsko mikrobiologijo in interakcije med bakterijami na ravni združb, predvsem s teoretično-eksperimentalnimi pristopi. Od leta 2013 uporabljam molekularno-ekološki pristop za preučevanje protimikrobne odpornosti (AMR) tako v okoljskih vzorcih (predvsem v vodi) kot tudi v humanih in veterinarskih okoljih.
I am Gianluca Corno, Research Director at the CNR - Water Research Institute in Verbania and Coordinator of the Environment Working Group within the PNCAR (National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance). I began my academic career in Germany, where I earned my PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön, followed by a postdoctoral position at the IOW in Rostock. After a brief period as a postdoc at the CNR-ISE in Verbania, I was awarded a Marie Curie Fellowship at the University of Zurich, before returning to Italy as a researcher at the CNR-Water Research Institute in Verbania in 2013, where I founded and have since coordinated the Molecular Ecology Group (MEG). My work focuses on environmental microbiology and community-level bacterial interactions, primarily through theoretical-experimental approaches. Since 2013, I have applied a molecular-ecological approach to the study of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in both environmental matrices (mainly water) and human and veterinary settings.
