Treatment of Contaminants of Emerging Concern in Water
Using Advanced Oxidation Processes

Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) are attracting great interest for the removal of deleterious contaminants in source waters, especially for the purification of water for potable use, treatment of wastewater effluent (i.e., for discharge or reuse applications), decontamination of industrial effluents, and remediation of groundwater. In particular, homogeneous and heterogeneous (i.e., catalytic, photocatalytic) AOPs are currently intensively explored, modified, and optimized for applications as stand-alone technologies or integrated with other processes in the overall treatment train for the destruction of contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) in water. Several new AOPs demonstrating promising results have been developed in recent years; of particular interest these include catalytic/photocatalytic technologies based on novel nanomaterials/nanostructures as well as conventional homogeneous processes that are seen increasing applicability in large-scale water treatment processes.In this presentation, Professor Dionysiou will overview mechanistic transformation pathways of treatment of a variety of contaminants of emerging concern in water using AOPs.
