Delft Blue and White Ceramic Glazes - Chemical Analysis and Colour Science for the Benefit of Art History and Conservation


The colloquium will present the results of a Dutch research project involving team members from the Netherlands, Slovenia and the United Kingdom. Seven members of the project team, consisting of conservators, scientists and art historians, will be present at the colloquium to share the results.

The project has two main goals. Firstly, the intention is to overcome the problem of 'metamerism' during conservation of ceramic glazes. Conservators find that when damaged areas of glaze are in-painted, the results often give a perfect match in the lighting of the conservation studio but do not match under the artificial lighting of museum displays. This problem, known as metamerism, is being overcome by a specially-designed computer program which produces pigment recipes which match the original glaze perfectly in all lighting conditions.

Secondly, the project is using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) in order to analyse the blue glaze composition. By means of these analyses, the role of raw materials is being investigated in relation to colour appearance and the art historical attribution of a range of delftware ceramics.

The project partners include:  University of Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, NL), National Institute of Chemistry (Ljubljana, SI), Colour4Free (Leeds, UK)
