The formation of zeolites from solution -
analysis by mass spectrometry

Zeolite nucleation is one of the most elusive phenomena in
zeolite science. One reason is the lack of suitable methods for the
analysis of arrangements consist of several ten atoms. Mass spectrometry is one of the few useful techniques. This method was developed to be used in the study of pre-nucleating and nucleating zeolite synthesis solutions. Information on the dynamics of precursor hydrolysis and condensation, exchange of silicon atoms between oligomers, and also structural information of species present close to nucleation can be obtained. Around the nucleation point, oligomeric species exist in solution, which are also found in the final solid structure for different zeolites. Moreover, mass spectrometry can give interesting information on the incorporation of heteroatoms into silicate structures.
