Biomedical Research and Innovation in a Globalized World

 

 

Currently, we are witnessing an unprecedented shift of wealth and power on a global scale that will have serious and severe consequences for the competitiveness of Europe. As Europe does not have cheap labour or significant natural resources, it is by now generally recognized that innovation of “knowledge intensive” products and processes is a requirement if Europe is to maintain its wealth and welfare. Health Care and Biotech is one of those sectors where Europe may remain competitive. However, the challenges for companies, universities and other institutions to be innovative are to train talents, to compete for talent, to motivate multi-disciplinary teams and to establish dynamic and value-adding partnerships between business and society in biomedical research and innovation.

In a globalized world the pace of competition is accelerating. Doing the same, even if you are good at it, is not enough while China, India, Vietnam and Korea are catching up, learning everything that is worth knowing and investing heavily in research and education with the intension to expand their “bio-economies”.
