izr. prof. dr.

Na novo bomo morali premisliti inteligenco, evolucijo in nas same.

Superintelligence: humanity’s last invention?

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Matjaž Humar

Jožef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia

The next few years may be the most crucial in human history. We are on the verge of creating something more intelligent than ourselves, yet we barely discuss the consequences. I will show how quickly these models are evolving, and why many researchers now expect human-level machines within years. Science is changing fastest of all. Used well, these models significantly amplify what researchers can do. I will present concrete examples from our own laboratory: generating research ideas, writing grant proposals, and drafting papers. In education, we argue about whether students may use these tools, instead of asking what they should learn in the first place, or what this knowledge is good for. Copernicus taught us that we are not the center of the universe, and Darwin showed that we are only one animal among many. We resisted both insights, and we are resisting again: we still cannot accept that we may soon no longer be the most intelligent being on this planet. We will have to rethink intelligence, evolution, and ourselves.

About the lecturer: Matjaž Humar is a scientific councilor at the Jožef Stefan Institute, where he leads the Laboratory for Biophotonics, Soft Photonics and Quantum Optics. He is an associate professor at the University of Ljubljana and the recipient of two European Research Council (ERC) grants, the current one devoted to developing quantum light sources from soft matter.
