Vabimo vas na predavanje v okviru »Kolokvijev IJS« ob letošnjih Dnevih Jožefa Stefana, ki bo danes, v ponedeljek, 24. marca 2025, ob 13:00 v Veliki predavalnici Instituta »Jožef Stefan« na Jamovi cesti 39 v Ljubljani. Predavanje bo v angleščini. Na voljo bodo kava, pijača in prigrizki.
Kvantni šum in samourejanje od rojstva vesolja do kvantnega računalništva

Samourejanje kvantnih sistemov je zelo pomembno na različnih področjih znanosti, od kozmologije do ved o življenju. Časovni razvoj kvantnih sistemov je določen s simetrijo, topologijo, vzročnostjo in prostorsko-časovnimi fluktuacijami. Tako se lahko neravnovesni kvantni sistemi več teles znajdejo v različnih pojavnih stanjih, ki so oblikovana na različnih časovnih in dolžinskih skalah, končni izid pa je določen s »kvantnim darvinizmom«. Predstavil bom časovno ločene poskuse metastabilnih stanj na časovnih skalah od femtosekund do ur, ki razkrivajo pravila za zlom simetrije in topološko koreografijo, kar skupaj usmerja trajektorije neravnovesnih sistemov v različna pojavna stanja. Poskusi razkrivajo novo fiziko, zlasti topološko prepletanje nabojev, frakcijsko nabita stanja in pojavno obnašanje dvonivojskih sistemov. Kot prvim nam je tudi uspelo posneti filme gibanja posameznih elektronov v realnem času. Na koncu bom izpostavil nekatere aplikacije metastabilnih stanj v kvantni tehnologiji in rentgenski optiki.
O predavatelju: Dragan Mihailović je znanstveni svetnik na Institutu »Jožef Stefan«, kjer vodi Odsek za kompleksne snovi. Hkrati je profesor fizike na Fakulteti za matematiko in fiziko Univerze v Ljubljani in direktor Centra odličnosti nanoznanosti in nanotehnologije (CENN). Je član Slovenske akademije znanosti in umetnosti (SAZU) ter prejemnik treh projektov ERC Evropskega raziskovalnega sveta.

Quantum noise and self-assembly from the beginning of the universe to quantum computing

The self-organisation of many-body quantum systems has been of great fundamental interest in different areas of science, from cosmology to life sciences. The temporal evolution of quantum systems is choreographed by symmetry, topology, causality and spatio-temporal fluctuations. Thus, non-equilibrium many-body quantum systems can end up in diverse emergent states that are textured on different time- and length-scales, the eventual outcome being determined by “quantum Darwinism”. I will present time-resolved experiments on metastable states on timescales ranging from femtoseconds to hours, revealing symmetry breaking rules and topological choreography, which conspire to guide non-equilibrium system trajectories into different emergent states. The experiments reveal new physics and, in particular, topological charge entanglement, fractionally charged states and emergent two-level system behaviour. We also managed, for the first time, to record movies of the motion of individual electrons in real time. I will conclude by highlighting some applications of metastable states in quantum technology and x-ray optics.
About the lecturer: Dragan Mihailović is a scientific councilor at the Jožef Stefan Institute where he heads the Department for Complex Matter. He is also a professor of physics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, University of Ljubljana, and director of the Center of Excellence in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CENN). He is a member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA) and the recipient of three ERC grants from the European Research Council.
