Vabimo vas na 12. predavanje iz sklopa »Kolokviji na IJS« v akademskem letu 2022/23, ki bo v sredo, 14. junija 2023, ob 13:00 v Veliki predavalnici Instituta »Jožef Stefan« na Jamovi cesti 39 v Ljubljani. Predavanje bo v angleščini. Na voljo bodo kava, pijača in prigrizki.

Kako nam trenutno lahko pomagajo zašumljeni kvantni računalniki?
Trenutno kvantni računalniki vsebujejo nekaj 100 kubitov, katerih življenjska doba je štiri velikostne rede krajša od časa za operacijo logičnih vrat. Ali je mogoče s takšno napravo sploh narediti kaj koristnega? Trdim, da lahko celo ti, zelo nepopolni in zašumljeni kvantni računalniki, naslovijo vrsto fizikalnih vprašanj, ki jih klasični računalnik ne more simulirati v smiselnem času. Osredotočil se bom na probleme teoretične fizike kondenzirane snovi in fizike več teles. Začel bom z opisom tipičnega superprevodnega kvantnega računalniškega čipa in orisal glavne fizikalne pojave, ki omejujejo njegovo koherenco. Nato bom razpravljal o fiziki, ki je najbolj prikladna za simulacijo na takšni napravi. Eno izmed zanimivih vprašanj je nastanek močno neergodičnih faz, ki jih še vedno slabo razumemo. Predstavil bom naše nedavno delo, v katerem smo odkrili nepričakovano odpornost vezanih stanj v okrašenih spinskih verigah, kar je prvi znak, da je kvantni računalnik na robu resničnih znanstvenih odkritij.
O predavatelju: Lev Ioffe je bil profesor na Univerzi Rutgers in Univerzi Wisconsin-Madison, preden se je preselil v Google Quantum AI laboratorij pri Google Research, kjer razvija kubitna vezja za napredno kvantno računalništvo.

What can we learn from noisy quantum computers right now?
At present, quantum computers contain some 100 qubits, whose lifetime is four orders of magnitude shorter than the time for a logic gate operation. Can one do something useful with such a device? I will argue that even these, very imperfect and noisy quantum computers can address a number of physics questions that cannot be simulated by a classical computer in a realistic time. The focus will be on the problems of theoretical condensed matter and many-body physics. I will start with the description of a typical superconducting quantum computing chip and outline the main physical effects that limit its coherence. I will then discuss the physics that is natural to simulate on such a device. One of the interesting questions is the formation of highly non-ergodic phases, which are still poorely understood. I will present our recent work, in which we discovered the unexpected resilience of bound states in decorated spin chains, the first indication that quantum computer is on the verge of real scientific discoveries.
About the lecturer: Lev Ioffe has been a professor at Rutgers University and University of Wisconsin-Madison before moving to Google Quantum AI lab at Google Research, where he develops qubit circuits for advanced quantum computing.
