Poljudna glikoznanost: gradnja, vizualizacija in igranje s kompleksnimi ogljikovimi hidrati

 

Glikoznanost je veda o ogljikovih hidratih, najštevilčnejših bioloških molekulah na Zemlji, ki predstavljajo del biologije vseh živih organizmov. Glikoznanost je po vsem svetu priznana kot novo področje s potencialom za radikalno nove biotehnološke aplikacije, ki bi lahko rešile nekatere izzive sodobne družbe. V dveh nedavno objavljenih knjigah “A Road-Map for Glycoscience in Europe” in “Transforming Glycoscience: A Roadmap for the Future”, ki sta izšli pod okriljem European Science Foundation and National Academies USA, je navedenih več ciljev te vede. V predavanju se bomo osredotočili na nekatere od teh, ki so skupaj z razvojem računalniških pristopov in glikobioinformatike pomembni za področje strukturne biologije in biofizike.

Popular Glycoscience: Building, Seeing and Playing with Complex Carbohydrates

 

Glycoscience is the science and technology of carbohydrates, which are the most abundant biological molecules on Earth and make up part of the biology of all living organisms. Glycoscience is recognised worldwide as an emerging area with the potential for radically new biotechnological applications to solve several of the challenges faced by modern society. In two recently published monographs, “A Road-Map for Glycoscience in Europe” and “Transforming Glycoscience: A Roadmap for the Future” published respectively under the auspices of the European Science Foundation and the National Academies USA, a selected number of goals were identified. The presentation will focus on some issues, which are relevant to the field of structural biology and biophysics along with developments in computation and glycobio-informatics.
