ULTRAHLADNI ATOMI: MODELSKI SISTEMI ZA KVANTNE SNOVI

Vzorci atomov s temperaturo nekaj nanokelvinov, pripravljeni s sodobnimi
metodami laserskega in izparilnega hlajenja, dajejo enkratno priložnost za
raziskavo mnogih pojavov v kompleksnih kvantnih sistemih. Ključne prostostne
stopnje in parametre lahko nadziramo na način, ki ga v tradicionalnih
kvantnih večdelčnih sistemih ni mogoče doseči. Bozonske in fermionske atome
uporabljamo za ustvarjanje Bose-Einsteinovih kondenzatov, degeneriranih
Fermijevih plinov in celo kvantno degeneriranih mešanic. Z optičnimi pastmi
lahko izdelamo makroskopske pasti, umetne kristale (t. i. optične mreže) in
nizkodimenzionalna okolja. Interakcijo med delci lahko spreminjamo z
magnetnim poljem z resonančnim pojavom, znanega kot Feshbachova resonanca. S
tem bogatim naborom orodij je mogoče eksperimentalno raziskovati mnoge
zanimive modelske sisteme, tesno povezane z različnimi vejami fizike. Po
splošnem uvodu v področje bo predstavljenih nekaj primerov tovrstnih študij
v Innsbrucku, vključno z novimi rezultati močno interagirajočih Fermijevih
plinov in malodelčnih stanj Efimova v Bosejevih plinih.

Lepo vabljeni!

Ultracold Atoms: Model Kits for Quantum Matter

Atomic samples with temperatures in the nanokelvin range, prepared by
advanced methods of laser and evaporative cooling, offer unique
opportunities to study a large variety of phenomena in complex quantum
systems. The important degrees of freedom and parameters can be controlled
in a way, not accessible to traditional quantum many-body systems. Both
bosonic and fermionic atoms are available to create Bose-Einstein
condensates, degenerate Fermi gases, and even quantum-degenerate mixtures.
Optical traps allow the experimentalists to realize macroscopic traps,
artificial crystals ("optical lattices"), and low-dimensional environments.
The interaction can be magnetically tuned exploiting a resonance phenomenon,
called "Feshbach resonance". Based on this rich tool-box, many intriguing
model systems can be experimentally studied with strong connections to
different branches of physics. After a general introduction into the field,
I will present a few examples based on research in Innsbruck, including new
developments on strongly interacting Fermi gases and few-body "Efimov"
states in Bose gases.

We look forward to meeting you at the "Kolokvij na IJS"!
