Naslov predavanja:  Hydrogen Energy: Is it a pipedream?

Kratka vsebina:
Global warming is the result of a build-up of greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere.  The biggest culprit is CO2, produced by burning fossil
fuels.  In order to reduce CO2 emissions we will have to find
alternative methods of primary energy production. Production sites of
alternative methods (wind, wave, tidal, geothermal, hydro and solar) are
often remote and the transmission of electrical energy over considerable
distance leads to undesirable energy losses.  A solution to this problem
is to use hydrogen as a secondary energy vector, using the primary
energy source to split water (H2O) by electrolysis or direct thermal
decomposition by focused solar energy. The hydrogen can then be piped to
where it is required and reconverted to useful energy by a number of
means, tailored to the particular circumstances.
This talk will describe the current use of hydrogen in industry.
Particular emphasis will be placed on the subject of hydrogen storage, a
critical technology in the development of hydrogen as a fuel for
transportation.
