 znaka za znanost in umetnost, je avtor več deset knjig in čez 250 člankov in razprav. Velja za utemeljitelja t. i. »dunajske šole« raziskav pozne antike in zgodnjega srednjega veka, ki se osredotoča na vprašanja, povezana z oblikovanjem, razvojem in (samo)razumevanjem

 ljudstev tistega časa kot so npr. Goti, Anglosasi in Franki, a tudi Avari in Slovani. Ta ljudstva in skupine so na tleh rimskega cesarstva ustanovila svoja kraljestva in podobne državne tvorbe. O tem podrobneje govori knjiga »Rimsko cesarstvo in njegovi Germani.

 Pripoved o izvoru in prihodu«, ki je v nemškem izvirniku izšla leta 2018. Po eni strani gre za sintezo, prikaz rezultatov dolgoletnih raziskav avtorja, njegovih sodelavcev in drugih raziskovalcev, po drugi pa za temeljno delo o razgibanem obdobju prehoda iz

 antike v srednji vek.</span></span></p>
